Apparently, it costs $83.3 million to get Fox News to begin reporting accurately about bad news for Donald Trump.
Because that's the amount a jury in Manhattan ordered Trump to pay Friday, for repeatedly defaming writer E Jean Carroll, whom a judge earlier had declared had been raped by the former president years ago at a New York department store.
Trump had already been found liable for defaming Carroll while he was president by mocking her allegation that he’d sexually abused her, so this jury was only tasked with determining how much she should be paid in damages.
The award included $11 million for damage to Carroll’s reputation, $7.3 million for emotional harm and other damages, and $65 million in punitive damages.
While the right-wing Fox News often ignores, or downplays, setbacks experienced by Trump, apparently Friday’s eye-popping damages were just too much to shrug off.
“I’m doing the math, it’s always dangerous, at least by addition here if you add everything up, including the $18.3 million, the $5 million originally, we’re looking at damages in this case eclipsing $83.3 million. That’s staggering,” said host Neil Cavuto, reporting the news live, on-air.
Friday’s decision was actually the second defamation finding for Carroll against Trump.
She was awarded $5 million last year, but the former president repeated the same false claims against Carroll within 24 hours of that verdict, including on national TV during a town hall event on CNN.
Fox host Shannon Bream speculated, on-camera, whether this new — much-larger — verdict might be enough to convince Trump to keep his mouth shut.
“And think about it, he has been able to take on his enemies at all different levels in many different business ventures and all things over time. But when you run up against a federal court, and a jury, and a judge, you will find out you are going to hit a wall at some point if you are found guilty. I mean, $83 million has got to make him think twice about every single time he wants to bring up this case or talk about the plaintiff,” she said.
