A Damning Day, Courtesy of Mark Meadows
“He’s got to condemn this shit ASAP,” Trump's son tweeted
A House select committee may have authorized charges be leveled against former Trump administration White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, for withdrawing his cooperation in their investigation into the events surrounding the January 6 insurrection, but the materials Meadows has turned over have landed with a bombshell in the nation’s capital and beyond.
Among the most damning materials Meadows has furnished the House select committee investigating the January 6 insurrection are a trove of texts which clearly demonstrate that Republicans who, today, are feverishly downplaying the severity of the riot at the Capitol, were well aware of the severity of the insurrection and the damage it could do to American democracy.
“Major #WhatTheFox moment listening to Jan 6th panel about Fox News hosts texting #markmeadows — Trumps chief of staff — to calm the shit down - including Laura Ingraham and Brian Kilmeade!! Interesting how they’ve been providing cover for Trump ever since. #Jan6Committee,” tweeted former Fox News host Gretchen Carlson.
These texts unveil rank hypocrisy among many prominent figures on the political right, including Kilmeade and Trump’s own son.
“Fox News host Brian Kilmeade privately said the January 6th insurrection was "destroying" Trump's legacy while lying on air about the violent attack,” tweeted MSNBC host Ari Melber.
Even Donald Trump Jr got involved, texting Meadows: “He’s got to condemn this shit ASAP.”
Now it becomes a question of which lawmakers could also be exposed.
“Now that the #Jan6thCommittee has outed Fox "News" anchors, America is waiting to hear who in #Congress sent texts to #MarkMeadows & others! There are many Repubs in the #House who will be exposed! Senators #Joshhawley #TedCruz #MikeLee & #LindseyGraham have the most to fear!!” tweeted popular Twitter user Dan Pereira.
Despite some of names of many of their personalities being directly invoked, Fox News apparently remained eerily silent on the news of the bombshell texts — only reporting the story well into Tuesday evening.
“Fox News just reported (for the first time today I believe) on the text messages its own anchors sent to Meadows. Predictably, they're portraying Hannity, Ingraham, and Kilmeade as heroes, ignoring that the texts contradict their later coverage,” tweeted journalist Aaron Rupar.
