A Taste of The Next Two Years: Official Perplexed After MTG Asks About ‘Drag Queen Story Hour’
Georgia congresswoman turns oversight hearing into embarrassing spectacle
If her performance Wednesday was any indication, Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene has provided a glimpse of how the next two years are going to go with her and other hard-right Republicans running congressional oversight.
Which is to say that it might be entertaining, but not particularly enlightening.
Speaker Kevin McCarthy gave the Georgia Republican — known for her support of QAnon and other bizarre conspiracy theories — an elevated perch on the House oversight panel.
He did this in exchange for her support in his battle to win the speakership.
But how Greene acquitted herself in questioning a top federal official Wednesday was nothing if not predictably embarrassing.
The House Oversight Committee had before them Gene Dodaro, comptroller general of the United States and head of the Government Accountability Office.
Dodaro has held his position since 2008, and served under both Democratic and Republican presidents, yet Greene chose to focus on one of the political right's current political boogymen — and apparently, for them — one of the greatest threats to the nation: drag queens.
Right-wingers, like Greene, have particularly worked themselves into a lather over a recent — an entirely non-violent — phenomenon known as “drag queen story hour,” in which public libraries across the country have invited local drag queens in to read children's books to groups of kids.
And Wednesday, it produced this mortifying — albeit supremely entertaining — interchange with Dodaro.
An excerpt of that conversation:
TAYLOR GREENE: “Can you tell me how much money was given to drag queen story hour?"
DODARO: "I'm sorry, can you repeat that?”
TAYLOR GREENE: "Drag queen story time, where men dressed up as women and read confusing books to children."
DODARO: "At first I thought you said ‘dry clean.’ I’m sorry. No, I don’t know the answer to either one of those two."
So, thanks to the congresswoman's crack investigative skills, the nation's taxpayers now have this high federal official on the record in two separate matters of great importance to the nation: drag queen story hour and drycleaning.
And this level of probing insight and high-minded discourse is what the nation has to look forward to with Marjorie Taylor Greene front-and-center of congressional oversight.
