‘Al Green Understood The Assignment’: Democrat Lauded for Rebellion During Speech
Congressman ejected after objecting to Trump Tuesday evening
Democratic congressman Al Green is being held up as a Democrat fighting back against Donald Trump’s chaotic and deeply authoritarian agenda.
The Texas lawmaker was escorted from the House chamber after he dramatically stood up in defiance as Trump delivered a televised address before a joint session of Congress.
Green’s resistance stands in sharp relief as many Americans express dissatisfaction and disappointment over what they see as too many Washington Democrats failing to take strong stands against Trump and his billionaire advisor Elon Musk’s efforts to dismantle large swaths of the federal government and indiscriminately fire thousands of federal workers in order to make way for another round of tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans.
Green, who’s already promised to attempt to once again impeach Trump, stood up during Trump’s speech, shouting and waving his cane.
After which, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson ordered the sargeant-at-arms to remove Green.
Later, the longtime congressman representing the Houston area, expressed no regrets over the incident.
“I'll accept the punishment. It's worth it to let people know that there's some of us who are going to stand up,” he said.
Some of Green’s fellow Democrats disapproved of his outburst, including Sen Richard Blumenthal, of Connecticut.
“I wouldn’t have done all the things that were done, and I understand the emotion, and Trump was so about bullying, boasting and blaming,” he is quoted as saying. “… We need to provide real solutions and avoid taking the bait.”
But pro-democracy and progressive activists praised Green’s energy and willingness to resist.
“Al Green understood the assignment,”wrote Sam Weinberg, the executive director of the progressive group Path to Progress, on Bluesky.
Ezra Levin, the co-founder of the grassroots group Indivisible, similarly said: “Al Green stood up. Would like to see more people stand up.”
