‘All Of The Progressive Ideas Are Enormously Popular’
Kamala Harris should govern from the left, some lawmakers say
Kamala Harris should embrace progressive policies if elected president, rather than govern from the center.
That’s according to at least two lawmakers from the left side of the political spectrum.
Harris’s surging campaign has propelled her and running mate, Minnesota Gov Tim Walz, ahead of their Republican rivals which has begun chatter about how she ought to govern if elected to the nation’s highest office in November.
“Let me tell you a big secret. But don’t tell anybody, right? And that is that virtually all of the progressive ideas are enormously popular. It may not be liked by the billionaire class or the corporate media, but they are enormously popular,” said Sen Bernie Sanders, the progressive Vermont independent who twice himself ran for president. “For example, should we expand Social Security benefits by $2,400 a year by lifting the cap on taxable income so billionaires pay their fair share? Widely popular. Over 70 percent of American people support that. Should we lower the cost of prescription drugs by half in America so they don’t pay more than other countries? Seventy percent of the American people support that. Should we expand Medicare to cover dental, hearing and vision? Over 70 percent of American people support that. Should we raise minimum wage to a living wage? Widespread support for that.
“So the big secret is, the stuff that we are fighting for, to give a break to the middle class and working families of this country, to try to take on massive income and wealth inequality, where three people have more wealth than the bottom half of American society, all of those are popular ideas,” Sanders added.
Rep Summer Lee (D-Pa) agrees.
“We have data, we have polling, and anecdotal evidence from Americans all across this country — but especially Pennsylvania, a swing state — that we’re not asking our candidates to run away from progressive ideals,” she said in a separate interview. “We’re asking them to run to them.
“You know, there’s this idea that having healthcare, or equitable education, or even talking about immigration reform and the border in a humane way, is somehow to the left. But that’s what I think the average American wants.”
