Ambassador's Explosive Interview Threatens to Sever US Support for Israel
Israeli diplomat outright rejects future Palestinian state
An Israeli ambassador's forceful, public rejection of any future state for the Palestinian people could help unravel the stalwart support for Israel which the Biden administration has demonstrated since the October 7 Hamas attacks.
Although he signaled unwavering support for Israel after the attacks which killed some 1,200 Israelis, President Biden more recently has voiced concern for what he called the Israelis’ “indiscriminate bombing” of Palestinian civilians in Gaza during their retaliation against Hamas.
More than 18,000 Palestinian civilians — including thousands of children and women — have been killed since Israel’s military operations began in Gaza after October 7.
Further, Biden's begun to split with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government over the future of Palestinians.
Biden said that Israel “can't say no” to a new Palestinian state, but Israel’s far-right top diplomat in the United Kingdom is doing just that.
In an explosive interview with British Sky News, Ambassador Tzipi Hotovely completely rejected the idea of two-state solution to find peace in the Middle East.
Sky News presenter Mark Austin asked directly if Palestinians could have a state, and Hotovely replied, “The answer is absolutely no and I'll tell you why.”
The interview quickly became much more contentious between Austin and Hotovely, who was a far-right politician in Israel before her diplomatic posting.
An excerpt of that encounter:
AUSTIN: “But -- but does one include the Palestinians living in a state of their own? Is that what it includes?”
HOTOVELY: “I think -- I think the biggest question is what type of Palestinians are the other side. This is what Israel realized on 7th of October.”
AUSTIN: “Do they have a state too?”
HOTOVELY: “The answer is absolutely no and I'll tell you why.”
AUSTIN: “Well then how could there be peace — ”
HOTOVELY: “Because at the moment — ”
AUSTIN: “ — how could there be peace in Israel?”
HOTOVELY: “No, I'll answer to you. The reason there is no peace is because the Palestinians — ”
AUSTIN: “How could — without offering — ”
HOTOVELY: “Mark -- Mark -- ”
AUSTIN: “ — a state to Palestine, how can there be peace in Israel?”
HOTOVELY: “Israel knows today and the world should know now, the reason that the Oslo Accords failed is because the Palestinians never wanted to have a state next to Israel. They want to have a state from the river to the sea.”
