'America Is Stronger When We Teach Historical Facts,' Democratic Congressman Says
California congressman calls out Texas decision to teach slavery as "involuntary relocation"
A prominent California Democrat is calling out a new social studies standard proposal in Texas which would begin teaching the history of slavery in the United States as "involuntary relocation."
The proposed change proposed to the Texas state education board is in reaction to the spate of state laws by Republicans which has begun banning the teaching of anything that would make students “uncomfortable.”
However, facts and history should still matter, according to Rep Ted Lieu (D-Calif).
“MAGA Republicans want to describe slavery as ‘involuntary relocation' to students. Republicans in Texas passed a law banning the teaching of anything that might cause ‘discomfort’ to students,” Lieu tweeted. “America is stronger when we teach historical facts to our children, not cover them up.”
