Amid Strong Support, Biden Warns Israel ‘There Are Rules of War’
Food, water and more have all been cut off to the residents of Gaza since attacks began
While he has forcefully promised to have “Israel’s back,” in its ongoing conflict with Hamas, President Biden has also begun warning Israelis to exercise a measured response and “operate by the rules of war.”
Israel has begun to retaliate fiercely for last Saturday's multi-pronged attacks by Hamas, in which already more than 2,500 people have died.
Israel has also cut off all supplies of food, water and fuel in a total blockade of Gaza and its 2.2 million residents, half of whom are children.
In the United States, President Biden has pledged total support for Israel and denounced the “horrific and ongoing attacks” by Hamas, saying that terrorism is never justified.
However, on Wednesday he also urged Israelis not to cross lines in their desire for retribution.
“And the one thing that I did say that it is really important that Israel, with all the anger, frustration and just — I don’t know how to explain it, that exists, is that they operate by the rules of war, the rules of war, and there are rules of war,” Biden said. “And I believe Israel is doing everything in its power to pull the country together, stay on the same page and we’re going to do everything in our power to make sure there’s a succeed and God willing, to bring home those Americans who are in harm’s way.”
Hamas is believed to be holding as many as 150 hostages in undisclosed locations, including some Americans.
