‘An Upright Man in America’: Walz Offers A Different Kind of Masculinity
Minnesota governor driving Republicans "nuts," Ocasio-Cortez says
Minnesota Gov Tim Walz, the Democratic nominee for vice president, is driving opponents Donald Trump and JD Vance “nuts,” according to a prominent progressive congresswoman who electrified Democrats with her remarks this week at the Democratic National Convention.
Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who addressed the nominating convention in Chicago on Monday, also joined this week as a guest on late-night host Stephen Colbert’s CBS program, where he asked her about Walz, whose been bringing a Midwestern relatability to the Democratic ticket with Vice President Kamala Harris.
A former high school teacher and football coach, Walz and his story seem to have become a good counterweight against the rival ticket of the narcissistic New York billionaire and his running mate Ohio Republican senator who talks endlessly about childless “cat ladies.”
“Governor Walz has simplified the argument against the GOP down to two basic parts. One is, ‘Mind your own damn business,’ and ‘They seem kind of weird.’ This has been driving Trump and Vance crazy. Has it been fun to watch?” Colbert asked Ocasio-Cortez, known popularly by her initials, AOC.
“Oh, it’s been so fun,” AOC answered.
“And why do you think it’s effective?” Colbert asked.
“I think that Trump and Vance, they think they have some kind of, like, monopoly over masculinity. And Walz has kind of shown up, he’s a football coach, he was the head of the gay-straight alliance as the football coach — ” the congresswoman replied, to cheering and applause from Colbert’s studio audience. “And he’s like, ‘Actually, this stuff is weird and why are you acting like that?’ And it’s driving them nuts because he’s showing another way to be an upright man in America.”
