AOC Comes Out to Try To Save Bowman in NY Primary
New Yorkers release video ahead of Tuesday's election
One of the most prominent progressives on Capitol Hill is trying to get voters to come out to save her embattled colleague from the neighboring district in New York’s primary election.
Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recorded a video with Rep Jamaal Bowman, her fellow New Yorker, calling voters to choose the incumbent over his much more conservative opponent, Westchester County Executive George Lattimer.
Bowman faces a perilous election, largely due to his views on the violence in Gaza.
A number of establishment Democrats —including one-time presidential candidate Hillary Clinton — are backing Lattimer.
Ocasio-Cortez, however, continues to support Bowman, a former school principal, for another term.
New Yorkers vote in the primary Tuesday, although early voting is underway.
“What’s up, everybody? We are just a few days out from Election Day, our primary election on Tuesday, June 25. But the good news is that the polls are open right now. And we are here for our brother, Jamaal Bowman,” Ocasio-Cortez said, opening the video. “We want to turn out the vote. I don’t care if you live in NY-16 and are turning out to vote for him. I don’t care if you live outside NY-16. We are texting our friends. We are turning out. We are calling our friends in Tuckahoe, in White Plains, in New Rochelle, in Yonkers, and telling them to vote for Jamaal Bowman.”
Bowman jumped in to say, “Ceasefire now, y’all! That’s what we’re doing! Ceasefire now, let’s get it poppin’!”
More than 38,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel began its military operations in Gaza following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks.
Most of those Palestinian dead have been young children and women.
In addition, up to 21,000 children are unaccounted for since Israel launched its war on Gaza, according to Save the Children. The advocacy group calls for a ceasefire to look for the missing children.
Bowman’s district has been flooded with a historic $12 million in attack advertisements and messaging, funded by the super political action committee of the right-wing American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
Bowman said that he is looking for “record turnout” across the district, which includes a small portion of the northern Bronx and the southern half of Westchester County, including the suburban cities of White Plains, Mount Vernon, Yonkers, New Rochelle, and Rye.
“The polls are open today. The polls are open tomorrow. Make sure you get out to vote. Election Day is Tuesday. Let’s go. We need record turnout all across the district, especially in Yonkers, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, Co-Op City and Edenwald. Let’s get it poppin,’ and let’s change the world,” Bowman declared. “It’s the many versus the money. We’re going to win. Let’s go, baby.”
Ocasio-Cortez also cast the battle to reelect Bowman as a message of the people vs the powerful.
“We’re going to win. We’re going to take on AIPAC and we’re going to kick some Wall Street ass. So let’s go!” she said, before Bowman ended the video with the declaration: “Stop the bombs!”
