AOC Denounces DeSantis’ Statement that All Palestinians Hate Jews
"Rhetoric like that" got a six-year-old stabbed, congresswoman says
A prominent Democrat on Capitol Hill is condemning recent statements by Florida Gov Ron DeSantis in which the Republican presidential hopeful said that all Palestinians are antisemitic.
It's that kind of reckless rhetoric that causes violence like a 6-year-old Chicago-area boy who was killed because he was Muslim, in the wake of the latest round of violence in the Middle East, according to the congresswoman, Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York.
DeSantis has been trying to revive his nearly moribund presidential campaign. Commenting on the possibility of the United States accepting refugees from the war between Israel and Hamas, he said, “We cannot accept people from Gaza into this country as refugees,” DeSantis said. “I am not going to do that. If you look at how they behave, not all of them are Hamas, but they are all antisemitic. None of them believe in Israel’s right to exist.”
Ocasio-Cortez sharply criticized those words, in an on-camera interview.
“I think there is something to be said about the region’s partners being able to support and step up Palestinians. However, that does not abdicate the United States from our historic role that we have played in the world of accepting refugees and allowing people to restart their lives here,” she said. “And I also want to address something very specific about what Governor DeSantis said when he said, ‘all Gazans are anti-Semitic.’ How incredibly destructive and dangerous that rhetoric is.
“We just had a six-year-old boy stabbed 26 times this morning because of rhetoric like that, and it is dangerous, it is unacceptable, it is reckless, and no leader in the United States of America should be amplifying a message like that,” she added.
