AOC: DeSantis’ Attacks on Teachers, Schools, LGBTQ Americans Represent ‘Profound Political Miscalculation’
"You can’t out-Trump Trump," congresswoman adds
Ron DeSantis is getting some political advice from an unlikely source.
The drumbeat of attacks by the Florida governor — and 2024 presidential aspirant — against LGBTQ Americans and others will serve only to make DeSantis less competitive in next year's general election, according to Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).
DeSantis and his Republican allies in the Sunshine State have been passing laws to limit the rights of transgender and other members of the LGBTQ community, restrict the teaching of Black history in the state and enact one of the most-draconian curbs on abortion rights in the country.
DeSantis is languishing far behind frontrunner Donald Trump for the nomination, and many see the Florida governor as now trying to run to Trump's right in order to gain support in the nominating contests.
Ultimately that strategy will fail, according to one of the most progressive members of Congress.
“Well, you can’t out-Trump Trump. Right? That is what he's really been trying to do. His attacks on teachers, on schools, on LGBT Americans, I think go way too far in the state Florida,” the congresswoman said. “And I think they are a profound political miscalculation and an overcompensation. He may be trying to win a base, but that base belongs to Donald Trump.
“He has sacrificed, I think, the one thing that others may have thought would make him competitive, which is this idea that he would somehow be more rational than Donald Trump, which he isn’t."
