Audience Cheers After Trump Jokes About Woman Who Died Due to Georgia Abortion Ban
Amber Thurman lost life due to doctors’ reluctance to offer care in face of state law
Donald Trump joked and mocked the death of a Georgia woman — and the pain of those loved ones she left behind — during an appearance this week on Fox News.
Worse: the studio audience in attendance for the taping cheered and applauded Trump’s derision.
The incident occurred Wednesday as the Republican presidential nominee was sitting with Fox News host Harris Faulkner for a “town hall” event with voters in the battleground state of Georgia.
Harris mentioned to Trump that the Peach State’s two Democratic senators, former Atlanta, Ga, mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and family members of Amber Thurman had spoken out ahead of the Trump event.
The 28-year-old Thurman lost her life as a result of the strict abortion ban Georgia officials put in place after the US Supreme Court overturned the national right to abortion two years ago.
Her story was made public last month in a report by the nonprofit news organization, ProPublica.
Thurman was a 28-year-old medical assistant who died of septic shock and her body’s failure to expel all fetal remains following delays in her medical care after a medication-based abortion. Georgia’s maternal mortality committee determined that Thurman's death was preventable and noted that the delay in performing the dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure significantly contributed to her death.
She had required a routine procedure to clear it from her uterus, called a dilation and curettage, or D&C.
But her state had made performing the procedure a felony, with few exceptions. Any doctor who violated the new Georgia law could be prosecuted and face up to a decade in prison.
The event organized by Thurman’s family and Georgia Democratic officials was intended to draw attention to Trump’s anti-abortion record.
In the end, it drew mockery from Trump and those who came to hear from him Wednesday at the Fox News event.
“So I want to share with you, Senators Warnock and Ossoff, Mayor Bottoms — Atlanta Mayor Bottoms, and Amber Thurman’s family have come out on a press call and they’re doing what’s called a ‘prebuttal’ to our town hall right now,” Faulkner told Trump.
“Oh, that’s nice,” Trump said, sarcastically.
“Yeah. And I want to get — ” Faulkner continued, before Trump cut her off with, “You’ll get better ratings, I promise,” and cheers from the audience.
