Bernie Sanders Barnstorms Midwest To Oppose Trump, Musk
Senator vows that stops in Iowa and Nebraska are “just the beginning”
Sen Bernie Sanders has taken his fight against Donald Trump, Elon Musk and their growing American oligarchy on the road.
Sanders, the outspoken progressive independent from Vermont who twice ran for president, had become a fixture on the floor of the US Senate, railing against the turn turn towards authoritarianism and oligarchy since Trump took office and let Musk loose disrupting and dismantling agencies across the federal government.
But in recent days, Sanders has been spreading his message in the American heartland, making appearances in red states that Trump won in November.
Sanders spoke before packed crowds in Iowa City, Iowa, and Omaha, Neb. He told his audiences not to expect politicians in Washington DC to stop Trump.
Sanders spoke behind a podium with the sign, “Fight Oligarchy.”
More than 3,400 turned out in Omaha alone, to see Sanders speak.
And among those who shared the stage with Sanders in Iowa was Brian Gibbs, recently laid off as a US park ranger.
“When we were planning these events, we had no idea how many people would show up. Last night we were in Omaha, and we had to turn away 800 people who couldn’t get in,” Sanders said in Iowa City. “And after I speak here — I think for the first time in my political life — I’m going to be running to another venue, a block away, to speak to another overflow crowd.”
Sanders said the nation “is facing a series of crises unprecedented in our modern history.”
“What we do now — in the coming days, and the coming weeks, and the coming months — will impact not only our lives, but the lives of our kids, the lives of our grandkids, and in fact the very well-being of the planet in terms of climate,” he said, to thunderous applause. “So if there has ever been a time in the modern history of our country to stand up and fight back, now is that time.
“In my view, and I say this with some knowledge and experience as a US senator, Trumpism will not be defeated by politicians inside the DC Beltway. For better or worse, that is not going to happen,” Sanders added. “It will only be defeated by millions of Americans in Iowa, in Vermont, in Nebraska — in every state in this country — who come together in a strong, grassroots movement, and say, ‘No,’ to oligarchy, ‘No,’ to authoritarianism, ‘No,’ to kleptocracy, ‘No,’ to massive cuts in programs that low-income and working Americans desperately need, ‘No,’ to huge tax breaks for the wealthiest people in this country. And that is why I am in Iowa today.”
After his speeches, Sanders took to social media to thank those who came out. And he promised that he would keep speaking out.
“Great turnout for our rallies against oligarchy in Nebraska and Iowa — and this is just the beginning,” he posted. “Blue state, red state, or purple state the American people don’t want Musk and his fellow billionaires running our country.”
