Biden Administration Must Get Involved On Behalf of $3.5 Trillion Package, Commentator Says
"This dream has a deadline on it," Avlon says
President Biden and his administration have, thus far, taken a hands-off approach on the fate of the $3.5 trillion spending package stuck in Congress and on the verge of failing.
But, if that sprawling budget bill fails, much of Biden and the Democrats' agenda goes with it.
It's time for Biden and members of his team to get personally involved in making sure the legislation becomes law, according to CNN anchor and political commentator John Avalon.
Sen Bernie Sanders (I-Vt) began assembling the $3.5 trillion spending package weeks ago when it became apparent that Biden was whittling away much of his own infrastructure initiative in order to win Republican votes.
Sanders assembled the $3.5 trillion package as an alternative vehicle to pass massive investments in the battle against global climate change and other aspects of the Democratic agenda. The $3.5 trillion bill is designed to be passed through a budget process known as “reconciliation,” which is immune from the filibuster.
However, the legislation requires the support of all of the Senate Democrats with their bare, 50-seat majority. And conservative Democratic Sen Joe Manchin of West Virginia pulled his support earlier this month, throwing the fate of the spending plan in jeopardy.
Sanders has continued to fight for his legislation, and now it's time for the Biden administration to join the fray, Avlon said Monday.
“There are some serious hurdles and this dream has a deadline on it. And the Biden administration needs to be totally focused on passing this,” he said. “You can’t make it perfectly good, I think they know that, they need to start acting that way.”
