Biden Denounces Republican Rhetoric on Trump Verdicts As ‘Dangerous’ and ‘Irresponsible’
President calls the US justice system "the cornerstone of America"
President Biden strongly condemned rhetoric coming from Donald Trump and others on the political right which has been calling Trump’s felony convictions illegitimate and “rigged.”
Trump became the first former president in US history Thursday to be convicted of criminal charges.
A jury in New York found Trump guilty of all 34 felony counts against him, in connection with a scheme to falsify business records to hide a payment to keep quiet a porn star who alleged an extramarital affair with Trump, just prior to Trump’s first election in 2016.
Trump is scheduled to be sentenced for the crimes in July, just days before he is to be officially nominated as the Republicans’ candidate for president.
Trump, expected to face Biden this fall in a rematch election, has been falsely and baselessly attacking his convictions as “rigged” and a “scam.”
Other Republican allies of Trump, likewise, have been falsely criticizing the verdicts on similar grounds, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Sen Ted Cruz, of Texas.
Biden deplored such rhetoric during remarks Friday at the White House in Washington DC.
“And it’s reckless, it’s dangerous, and it’s irresponsible for anyone to say this was rigged just because they don’t like the verdict,” he said. “Our justice system has endured for nearly 250 years and it literally is the cornerstone of America. Our justice system.
“The justice system should be respected and we should never allow anyone to tear it down. It’s as simple as that,” Biden added. “That’s America. That’s who we are. And that’s who we’ll always be.”
