Biden: ‘If You Give Me Two More Democratic Senators in the United States Senate, I Promise You We’re Gonna Codify Roe’
President also vows to veto any Republican bills aimed at further outlawing abortion rights
President Biden attempted to rally the Democratic base Friday, promising that if voters pad their razor-thin Senate majority in November, Democrats will be able to write abortion rights guarantees into federal law.
The US Supreme Court decision earlier this year to overturn Roe v Wade and upend nearly a half century of national abortion rights, has started firing up Democratic voters and swinging momentum in the upcoming crucial midterm elections towards the Democratic Party.
Biden said that an additional two Democrats in the Senate — currently at the narrowest 50/50 majority possible — could enable the passage of legislation which would codify into federal law the same abortion rights guaranteed under Roe.
Biden spoke Friday before a teachers' union audience in Washington DC.
He also promised that, if Republicans somehow took control of Congress and passed bills to further outlaw abortion, he would veto the legislation.
“And, by the way, it will be initially banned, but if they win Congress, I will veto it,” the president said to applause. “But think what’s happening. They’re banning in the case of — in the case of rape and incest in many states. No exceptions. And they’re going to be — they’re trying to criminalize it nationwide.
“But if you give me two more Democratic senators in the United States Senate, I promise you — I promise you — we’re going to codify Roe,” Biden said to further applause. “We’ll once again make Roe the law of the land. And we’ll once again protect a woman’s right to choose. And the power to get this done is in the hands of the American people, especially the women of America.”
