BIDEN LABELS BUFFALO SHOOTING 'DOMESTIC TERRORISM'
President comes to grieve with friends and loved ones of the fallen
President Biden and First Lady Dr Jill Biden landed in Buffalo, NY, just as this city has begun to mourn those slain at a neighborhood supermarket here on Saturday, a racist rampage which the president condemned in some of harshest rhetoric possible.
The slain, who ranged in age from 32 to 86 years old, were either working or shopping at the Tops Friendly Markets store on Jefferson Avenue. Three others were injured but survived. Among those killed — a deacon, a civil right advocate and the store's security guard, who was killed after exchanging gunfire with the shooter.
Social media and other evidence points to a motive of hate and racism on the part of the gunman, who reportedly considered predominantly Black neighborhoods in nearby Rochester before settling on this Buffalo area as his target.
“What happened here is simple and straightforward: Terrorism. Domestic terrorism ... a hate that, through the media and politics, the internet, has radicalized angry, alienated, lost, and isolated individuals into falsely believing that they will be replaced — that’s the word, ‘replaced’ — by the ‘other’ — by people who don’t look like them and who are therefore, in a perverse ideology that they possess and being fed, lesser beings.”
A number of prominent figures on the right — particularly Fox News host Tucker Carlson — have been very open about trafficking and spreading this racist “white replacement theory” in recent months.
The president vowed that white supremacy, which continues to gain an ever-widening foothold in the United States, would never win.
“Jill and I bring you this message from deep in our nation’s soul: In America, evil will not win — I promise you. Hate will not prevail. And white supremacy will not have the last word,” he said.
