Biden Takes Shot At Controversial Trump Postal Chief With New Law
DeJoy's days numbered as Biden postal nominees advance in Senate
President Biden signed into law a postal reform bill Wednesday, as part of moves to take direct aim at Postmaster Louis DeJoy, who was appointed during the Trump administration and blamed for creating longstanding problems at the US Postal Service.
The law Biden signed Wednesday provides valuable financial stability to the US Postal Service (USPS), a financial position weakened by previous laws passed decades ago.
USPS is essentially broke because of past laws limiting how it spends its money and what services it could offer, reported USA Today political reporter Ella Lee.
The Postal Service Reform Act of 2022, which Biden signed into law, will give the agency that flexibility back.
“The Postal Service is central to our economy,” Biden said, before signing the Postal Service Reform Act of 2022 into law.
“Fire Louis DeJoy”
The new law also was directed as a warning to DeJoy, who has been a controversial holdover from the Trump administration and who has been blamed with taking actions deliberately aimed at weakening USPS.
In what should have been seen as a flagrant conflict of interest, prior to his appointment as postmaster general, DeJoy was the founder and CEO of the logistics and freight company New Breed Logistics and was a major Republican Party donor and fundraiser.
DeJoy is the first postmaster in two decades without prior experience in the USPS. Controversially, his companies still hold active service contracts with the USPS.
Under DeJoy, USPS affirmed that its new fleet of vehicles would be made by union workers when it awarded Oshkosh an $11 billion contract.
But after questioning from Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) this week, it’s clear they lied. USPS and Oshkosh never intended to use union labor.
DeJoy’s hands now have been tied in key areas, as a result of the reform legislation Biden signed.
Meanwhile, the president's appointees have moved out of committee, and are headed for the full Senate for confirmation.
“The Postmaster General is chosen by the USPS Board of Governors. President Biden’s nominees to the board are finally now before the full Senate. They need to be confirmed immediately. And at the board’s next meeting, the very first order of business should be to fire Louis DeJoy,” tweeted Tristan Snell, attorney and founder of MainStreet.law which represents small- and mid-size businesses, entrepreneurs, and creators.
Sen Ed Markey (D-Mass) had harsh words Wednesday for DeJoy.
“I'm sending a message to Postmaster Louis DeJoy—a union-built fleet of electric postal trucks will unleash a clean energy revolution and save the USPS money. If we can't get an electrified next generation postal fleet, we are going to need a new generation of USPS leadership,” the lawmaker tweeted.
DeJoy, himself, was at the White House Wednesday to be on-hand for the signing of the reform bill.
DeJoy told Peter Alexander, of NBC News, that he did not speak with Biden during his White House visit.
“No, I did not,” he said. “I have mail to deliver.”
