Biden: You Can’t Love Your Country Only When You Win
President issues warning only days ahead of the midterm elections
President Biden is warning Americans that as the first national elections since the violent January 6, 2021, insurrection at the US Capitol, next week's midterm elections are occurring at a time when the nation's democracy remains threatened.
The president's admonition in a speech Wednesday came only days after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband was brutally beaten in their San Francisco, Calif., home in what has become clear to be a politically motivated crime.
Voters go to the polls next Tuesday to elect members of both chambers of Congress — in addition to state governors and many more elected positions — for the first time since domestic terrorists supporting Donald Trump violently and illegally attempted to overturn the results of the 2020 election in an attempt to keep Trump in power.
Since his loss in 2020, Trump has been continuing to spread his “Big Lie,” the baseless and completely false charges that Democrats somehow stole the election from him.
“I wish, I wish I could say the assault on democracy ended that day, but I cannot. As I stand here today, there are candidates running for every level of office in America, for governor, Congress, attorney general, secretary of state, who won’t commit, that will not commit to accepting the results of election that they’re running in,” Biden said. “This is the path to chaos in America. It’s unprecedented. It’s unlawful. And it’s un-American.
“As I’ve said before, you can’t love your country only when you win. This is no ordinary year. That's why I ask you to think long and hard about the moment we’re in,” the president added.
