Biden’s Age, Wisdom Moved ‘Transformative Pieces of Legislation,’ Democratic Strategist Says
President in better shape than Obama was headed towards reelection, he adds
Although President Biden's age usually is seen as a political liability, his age and experience actually have been key assets, according to a prominent pollster and political strategist.
A new NBC News poll found voters have concerns about President Biden's age and health as he runs for re-election in 2024, in what is just the latest manifestation over concern that the president would be 86 years old at the end of a second term.
In reality, however, it's been his decades of experience in government service that has allowed Biden to get so much accomplished during the early years of his first term, according to Cornell Belcher, head of Brilliant Corners Research & Strategies, a firm which helped Barack Obama's elections to the White House in 2008 and 2012.
“If you look at where Biden is right, now he’s not that dramatically different from where the president – who I worked on was at this time, in 2011. Obama was running behind Mitt Romney, and tied or running behind the whole cast of characters who were running at that time,” Belcher said. “I don’t worry so much about what the poll numbers are going to [be], now; what I focus on is what the story is. What is the narrative that Biden has to tell the American people over the next year if you’re so?
“To be truthful, I worked for, Obama but in a lot of ways, Biden is even better positioned than Obama was in the story than it has to tell,” he added. “He does have a story to tell about his old age, you know what his age and wisdom has been able to do? It’s been able to be transformative pieces of legislation, that no president has ever been able to do before.”
