Buttigieg: Paid Family Leave Is ‘Not a Vacation’
Transportation Secretary Has Been Target For Homophobic Tucker Carlson
Perhaps more than anyone in the Biden administration, Pete Buttigieg can talk paid family leave to the American people.
President Biden's transportation secretary, Buttigieg recently has begun his own paid family leave to care for newly adopted twins with husband Chasten.
The former mayor of South Bend, Ind., and one-time contender for the Democratic presidential nomination, Buttigieg has also become the target of vile homophobic attacks from Fox News host Tucker Carlson over his family leave.
Biden and congressional Democrats are trying to enact national paid family leave for all Americans as part of the Build Back Better Act spending package which they are trying to pass into law.
Buttigieg said that he is “part of an administration that walks the walk on family values.”
“It’s in the president’s vision, we’ll see what the legislative process is going to bring. The president has been very clear on what he’s calling for. The American people want this, too. I wish that this is something that Republicans could join Democrats in calling for,” Buttigieg said. “Paid family leave is important. It’s important as a matter of family values, important to our economy. One more thing that I think is maybe underappreciated.
“When somebody welcomes a new child into their family and goes on leave to take care of their child, that’s not a vacation,” he added. “It’s work. It’s joyful, wonderful, fulfilling work. It is work, and it’s time that our nation join pretty much every other country in the world and recognize that.”
