Calling Jan 6 Rioters ‘Hostages’ Is ‘Just Unacceptable,’ Former VP Declares
Pence further denounces former boss
Former vice president Mike Pence further broke with his former boss and other Republicans who refer to those who stormed the US Capitol Building in January 6, 2021, as “hostages.”
Donald Trump, and many of his allies, have been defending those being prosecuted and sentenced for their crimes on January 6 as “patriots,” and “hostages.”
Violent supporters of Trump rioted on that day to attempt to stop the lawful certification of Joe Biden as the next president of the United States.
Trump once again referred to those Americans as “hostages,” this weekend at a campaign rally in Ohio, and said that they are being treated “very unfairly.”
Pence, who was a target of the January 6 mob because he wouldn't overturn the results of the 2020 election, was having none of it.
“Well, I think it’s very unfortunate, at a time that there are American hostages being held in Gaza, that the [former] president or any other leaders would refer to people that are moving through our justice system as ‘hostages,’” Pence said, in an on-camera interview with CBS News host Margaret Brennan. “And it’s just — it’s just unacceptable. I was there on January 6. I have no doubt in my mind, Margaret, that some people were caught up in the moment and entered the Capitol, and and they’re certainly entitled to due process of law for any nonviolent activities that day.
“But the assaults on police officers, ultimately an environment that claimed lives, is something that I think was tragic that day and I’ll never diminish it,” Pence added.
