Carter Home 'Is Full of Love,' Grandson Says
Outpouring on social media as former president reaches his final days
The home of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter is “full of love,” as the former president has given up further medical intervention and has begun receiving hospice care at the Plains, Ga., residence he shares with the former first lady, according to the couple's grandson.
A tweet by former Georgia state senator Jason Carter was just part of an outpouring of well wishes for the 98-year-old 39th president of the United States across social media over the last 24 hours or so.
“I saw both of my grandparents yesterday. They are at peace and—as always—their home is full of love. Thank you all for your kind words,” Jason Carter posted, along with a statement from the non-profit center founded by his grandfather after the end of his presidency in 1981.
The elder Carter has given up further medical treatment after a “series of short hospital stays,” and instead spend “his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care,” according to the statement.
Christopher Hale, a Tennessee Democrat and an alum of Barack Obama's White House, gave tribute to Carter's vast legacy of service to others, posting a vintage photo of the former president as a young Naval officer with Rosalynn.
“As Lieutenant James Earl Carter Jr. enters the final stages of his uniquely outstanding American life, he and his beloved Rosalynn are worthy of our prayers and our best wishes,” Hale tweeted. “A man whose lived his entire life for others, he’s someone our posterity can look up to.”
Asha Rangappa, a lawyer and former FBI agent, recalled her time interning at the Carter Center, which has taken on huge projects worldwide to promote democracy, public health and more.
“I spent the summer after my junior year of college working at The Carter Center in Atlanta. All of the interns got to go to Plains, GA to hear President Carter give a Sunday School sermon. I wrote about his sermon for my law school essay,” she posted, along with an autographed photo of her shaking the former president's hand.
Meanwhile, noted presidential historian and author Michael Beschloss, has practically turned his Twitter account into a virtual exhibit on Carter's life and career, including a 1976 quote from the then-presidential hopeful.
“Jimmy Carter in 1976--his words are perfect for 2023: ‘I want to see us once again have a nation that's as good and honest and decent and truthful and competent and compassionate and filled with love as are the American people,’” Beschloss observed.
