CDC Getting Blowback Over Reduced Quarantine Period
“Maybe the @Delta CEO should ask to cancel student loans - he gets whatever he wants,” tweet says
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is seeing some severe criticism over its recent decision to cut the quarantine period for COVID-19 patients down to five days.
The CDC cut the recommended quarantine period this week to five days, saying that it was doing so “motivated by science demonstrating that the majority of SARS-CoV-2 transmission occurs early in the course of illness, generally in the 1-2 days prior to onset of symptoms and 2-3 days later,” using a technical name for COVID-19.
Critics disagree, saying that the change was made specifically to bend to the needs of corporate interests, particularly those of the airline industry.
“The CDC cutting quarantine guidelines in order to please airline executives who want to send sick staff back to work is so evil and Trumpian, Larry Kudlow and the Invisible Hand of the Market are currently toasting to Biden over a scotch,” tweeted podcaster and journalist Francesca Fiorentini, referring to the CNBC commentator and former advisor to Donald Trump.
Specifically, it was the CEO of Delta Airlines who asked for the quarantine cut, according to Boston-based National Public Radio reporter Tori Bedford.
A Twitter account calling itself Real Facade retweeted Bedford’s news, and remarked, “Maybe the @Delta CEO should ask to cancel student loans - he gets whatever he wants,” in a wry comment on the fact that other Democrats have been pushing — in vain — for the Biden administration to cancel student loan debt.
Bedford's tweet noted that a 10-day quarantine remains the norm in Canada, the United Kingdom and across Europe.
Also, not all local US jurisdictions are signing on to the shortened isolation period. Montgomery County, Maryland — which is Maryland's largest jurisdiction which directly abuts the nation’s capital — is, for instance, remaining with the longer 10-day recommended quarantine.
