Charles Barkley Defends Bud Light, Trans People: ‘I Want You All to Drink This F*ckin’ Beer’
One-time basketball phenom wades into culture controversy
Former basketball star Charles Barkley has come out to defend both a brand of beer which has come under fire from the political right, as well as transgender people who also have been in the firestorm of controversy.
Barkley, an 11-time NBA All-Star, entered the long-brewing outrage from those on the political right who have been seething over a brief endorsement deal between Bud Light and prominent social media influencer Dylan Mulvaney.
The partnership between Mulvaney, who is transgender, and the beer brand resulted in boycotts on the right, as well as several well-known right-wing figures firing high-powered weapons at cans of the beverage. Some Republican senators even threatened to investigate Anheuser-Busch and Mulvaney over the partnership.
Barkley — the NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 1993 — has gone in another direction, however.
In expletive-laden remarks at a party captured on video, Barkley clearly defends both the embattled brand as well as the transgender and wider LGBTQ communities.
“I want y'all to drink this f**kin’ beer. I want y'all to drink this f**kin’ beer. I got three cases of Bud Light,” the sports star said. “Hey, and I want to say this: If you're gay, bless you. If you're transgender, bless you. And if you have a problem with that, f**k you!”
