Citing Supreme Court, Md's Republican Governor Dismantles Gun Control
Hogan to leave office in January
The Republican governor of Maryland used last week's US Supreme Court decision striking down gun control in New York as a rationale for undoing a gun control measure in his state.
Gov Larry Hogan made the announcement Tuesday on social media, in what is certainly an attempt to curry favor with the national Republican Party.
“In light of a recent Supreme Court ruling and to ensure compliance with the Constitution, I am directing the Maryland State Police to suspend utilization of the ‘good and substantial reason’ standard when reviewing applications for Wear and Carry Permits,” Hogan tweeted.
Last week, the Supreme Court struck down New York's gun law that required a resident to obtain a license to carry a concealed pistol or revolver in public and demonstrate that “proper cause” existed for the permit.
However, where New York's Democratic governor, Kathy Hochul, responded to the Supreme Court decision by signing a new version of the legislation into law, Republican Hogan simply chose to capitulate to the right-wing court.
Hogan has navigated his two terms as a Republican atop the blue state of Maryland by largely avoiding — and staying silent on —social matters like gun control and LGBTQ rights.
However, he is term-limited and will be leaving office in January. And after spending several years antagonizing Donald Trump, Hogan clearly is looking to burnish his right-wing bona fides for a future perhaps on the national stage.
