Commentator: ‘Petulant and Not So Bright’ Elon Musk Just Handed Twitter to the Far-Right and May Push Trump Back to Presidency
The American left and American right are not equivalent, he adds
The growing QAnon and neo-Nazi elements of the Republican Party could well expand their power in the 2022 midterm elections, come November. And former president Donald Trump could well be boosted back to power two years later.
And it could all be because of what's going on right now with the world’s richest man, and his desire to acquire the social media titan Twitter.
So says at least one prominent TV political commentator.
Billionaire industrialist, and CEO of electric vehicle maker Tesla, Elon Musk stunned the world last month with a surprise bid to buy all of Twitter, for $44 billion, and convert it to a private company.
Twitter said the deal is expected to close sometime this year and is subject to the approval of Twitter stockholders and regulators.
But if it goes through, it could well only embolden the most radical elements of the Republican Party, according to Medhi Hasan, a well-known commentator who hosts political programs on MSNBC and the Peacock streaming service.
“So tell me again how it feels like the Democrats have gone rogue? Did they happen to launch a coup that I missed? Did they suddenly start accusing their opponents of eating babies?” Hasan asked, rhetorically, ticking off some of the worst offenses by Republicans over the last couple of years. “I mean, it’s easy in American discourse to talk simplistically about the far left and the far right as two equally dangerous fringe blocks.
“Elon Musk has done plenty of times just in the past week. But here’s the difference. America’s far left wants to give us free health care and free childcare. America’s far right wants to give us white supremacy and no democracy,” Hasan said. “And this asymmetrical polarization of U.S. politics would be laughable if it weren't so horrifying.”
Musk's bid to buy Twitter has been widely praised across the political right.
“We are living through an unspeakably dangerous moment. The pro-QAnon, pro-neo-Nazi faction of the Republican Party is poised to expand dramatically, come the midterms,” he added. “We're just two years away from Donald Trump very possibly re-seizing executive power. If that happens, we may look back on this past week as a pivotal moment, when a petulant and not-so-bright billionaire casually bought one of the most influential messaging machines and just handed it to the far right.”
