Commentator Sets September 21 As Benchmark for January 6 Justice
Rothkopf draws parallel between Watergate and the January 6 insurrection
Americans concerned about a higher degree of justice and accountability for those behind the sedition and attempted coup carried out on January 6, 2021, should set September 21 as a date to keep in mind with some historical parallel, according to a political commentator and author.
It was 623 days from the the Watergate break-in to the indictments being handed down against several top aides of President Richard Nixon for their roles in the attempted cover-up of the break-in of Democratic Party headquarters in the Watergate building, noted David Rothkopf author of the book, American Resistance, a columnist for The Daily Beast and member of the board of contributors at USA Today.
“It was 623 days from the Watergate break-in to the indictments being handed down against Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell and 4 others. 623 days from January 6th, 2021 is September 21st. Just a date to keep in the back of your mind,” he tweeted Sunday.
Several Nixon lieutenants went to prison for their roles in the Watergate scandal. Nixon, himself, resigned the presidency rather than face certain impeachment and removal from office. And he was saved from criminal involvement only because his successor, Jerry Ford, issued Nixon a presidential pardon.
Federal prosecutors have been actively — and successfully — pushing cases for months against the violent and extremist supporters of former president Donald Trump, often securing prison time for many of those who participated in the deadly storming of the US Capitol Building on the day of the legal and legitimate certification of Joe Biden as the next president of the United States.
However, accountability has yet to come for any of the cadre of Trump aides and loyalists who also allegedly played parts in what is increasingly being viewed as an attempted coup against the government of the United States. This also includes Trump himself.
The bipartisan House select committee investigating the events surrounding the January 6 insurrection have been gathering evidence and may well be on its way to authorizing criminal referrals to the federal Justice Department for those who likely committed crimes surrounding the 2020 presidential election.
The select committee is due to resume public hearings on June 9.
Some have become concerned that Attorney General Merrick Garland does not seem eager to seek justice against the higher ranking individuals who likely committed crimes surrounding the insurrection.
However, there is evidence that a federal grand jury is doing just that, according to prominent legal analyst and longtime former federal prosecutor, Glenn Kirschner.
Such Trump insurrection figures as former attorney Rudy Giuliani, right-wing attorney John Eastman and others are already targets of the grand jury, Kirschner said in one of his recent YouTube videos.
This includes for those slates of fake electors Trump backers were trying to put forth in an attempt to thwart the outcome of the 2020 election and install Trump for an illegal second term in the White House.
“Now it's certainly good that the Department of Justice is using a federal grand jury to criminally investigate the activities of these treasonous lawyers,” Kirschner said.
