Congresswoman: ‘In Our Minds DEI Stands for “Definitely Earned It”’
Republicans used acronym for "diversion, equity and inclusion" as a slur against Harris
A Democratic congresswoman flipped the script on an acronym Republicans have been using as a racist slur against Vice President Kamala Harris.
“DEI” stands for “diversity, equity, and inclusion,” and refers to practices and policies intended to support people who come from varying backgrounds and give them the resources they need to thrive in the workplace.
Republicans, however, have tried to undermine and pervert its meaning as a kind of racist slur, and they have been calling Harris a “DEI hire,” to suggest that the vice president has not earned her position.
Democratic Rep Debbie Wasserman Schultz, of Florida, this week sought to turn the tables and reclaim the term during a session at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
“When someone calls Vice President Harris a ‘DEI candidate,’ remind them that in our minds DEI stands for ‘definitely earned it,’” said Wasserman Schultz, who previously served as chair of the Democratic National Committee. “Because we know her record, and we know the bullshit smears. Her record was as a successful district attorney, a successful attorney general, a successful United States senator and a successful vice president of the United States of America.
“She focused on combating crime and rehabilitating people supporting victims and pursuing justice, and she took on corporate greed and defended working class Americans,” she added.
