Conservative Democrat Backs Gun Control After Slaughter in his Hometown
Golden acknowledges "failure" to back ban on assault-style weapons
One of the most conservative Democrats in Congress, Rep Jared Golden, is acknowledging his “failure” not to back gun-safety legislation before a gunman's rampage in his hometown left 18 people dead and 13 others injured.
Golden was born in Lewiston, Maine, where a gunman opened fire Wednesday evening in two separate locations. That presumed shooter is still at-large.
Golden has represented Maine’s more-Republican 2nd District since 2019. He has voted in line with President Biden's stated at the lowest rate of any House Democrat.
“I have opposed efforts to ban deadly weapons of war like the assault rifle he used to carry out this crime. The time has now come for me to take responsibility for this failure, which is why I now call on the United States Congress to ban assault rifles like the one used by the sick perpetrator of this mass killing in my hometown of Lewiston, Maine,” he said at a news conference in Lewiston the day after the murders. “For the good of my community, I will work with any colleague to get this done in the time that I have left in Congress.”
