‘Copycat Kamala’: Republicans Try To Land New Jibe on Surging Democratic Nominee
VP knocked for her desire to end taxation of tips for service and hospitality workers
Struggling to land any successful political blows on the surging candidacy of Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Donald Trump’s Republican allies are testing a new potential line of attack.
Prominent figures on the political right are blasting Harris for her support for a policy of ending taxation of tips for service and hospitality workers.
They say that Harris, who announced her position over the weekend in a campaign stop in Las Vegas, Nev.
“We will continue our fight for working families of America, including to raise the minimum wage and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers,” Harris said in Nevada.
Republicans accuse her of copying that policy from Trump, who has offered similar proposals.
Although Harris is pairing her no-taxes-on-tips plan with a proposal to raise the federal minimum wage, Trump has not mentioned any desire to raise a wage that has remained stagnant at just $7.25 per hour for 15 years.
Larry Kudlow, who once served as a White House economic advisor for Trump, jabbed Harris Monday on his program on the Fox Business network.
“So, ‘Copycat Kamala’ plagiarizing President Trump’s hottest tax cut. That’s the subject of The Riff. That’s right, ‘Copycat Kamala,’” he said. “She is plagiarizing Donald Trump’s idea for tax-free tips for waiters, maître d’s, barbers, delivery people, Uber drivers, the whole gig economy. Mr. Trump unveiled his idea last June in Las Vegas. Kamala did it Saturday, also in Las Vegas.”
