‘Delusional’: Trump Says He Can Win in Deep-blue New York
The Empire State hasn't elected a Republican for president since the Reagan era
He’s been losing electoral ground across the country since Vice President Kamala Harris stepped in to run for president, but Donald Trump decided not only to hold a rally in his home state of New York — but announced that he will win the deep-blue state, as well.
That prompted one CNN host to describe the Republican as “being delusional.”
Trump held the event Wednesday on Long Island, in a state that hasn’t voted for a Republican for president for 40 years.
It was a move that left many scratching their heads, as Harris grows her lead among voters both nationally and in the few battleground swing states that actually will decide the election.
Particularly so, as the Trump campaign distantly trails the Democratic ticket in fundraising, as well. Harris raised nearly three times as much as her opponent last month.
“‘Republicans can’t win,’ they said. I can win New York and we can win New York. We’re going to win New York.
Trump’s aspirations seem unlikely for a state that hasn’t elected a Republican for president since Ronald Reagan’s 1984 landslide.
Moreover, both Hillary Clinton and President Biden trounced Trump in the Empire State in Trump’s two previous runs for the White House, by 20 percentage points or more.
You’d think that Trump would be better served spending his time and money elsewhere as the election draws near, according to CNN host Erin Burnett.
“So, let me just go back to those swing state polls, including the one that I led the show with — Pennsylvania — that has him losing by, frankly, by an overwhelming margin, a state that if Harris wins, it is really, really hard for her to lose the election. Maybe you‘d think Trump would be in Pennsylvania or another one of those swing states,” she said on-camera, Wednesday. “But he was there in New York City. And as I speak, he‘s about to hold a rally in Uniondale, NY. Now, that area is a Republican stronghold, but, of course, that‘s just one area.
“The campaign says it‘s given out 60,000 tickets, right, so you can have a successful rally there, but here‘s the thing. Trump lost New York by 20 percentage points in 2020 and 2016. 20! So is he being delusional when he says this?” Burnett asked.
