‘Democracy And The Rule of Law As A Basic Principle’: Blue States Prepare Resistance As More Join Fight
And Trumpworld is starting to take notice of the growing opposition
Even though just a few days have passed since Donald Trump won Tuesday’s election, leaders of big blue states already are coalescing as resistance to the far-right agenda coming once Trump is back in the White House.
New York’s Democratic state attorney general and California’s governor both came out publicly to take major actions to strongly defend their populous states’ progress on matters such as reproductive rights, climate change, and LGBTQ+ rights.
Illinois, Massachusetts, and New Jersey all joined the growing number of states forming the resistance, as Democrats begin preparing a line of defenses aimed at guarding their states from the onslaught that they know will be coming fast once Trump is inaugurated in January.
Massachusetts Gov Maura Healy (D), particularly, singled out democracy as a key area which the Bay State plans to protect.
She also vowed that Massachusetts law enforcement would not cooperate with any Trump plans to deport mass numbers of migrants.
Healy appeared on MSNBC Thursday evening, for an interview.
Host Lawrence O'Donnell asked the governor, specifically, whether Massachusetts State Police would help the new Trump administration round up migrants.
“No, absolutely not,” Healy replied, adding, “But, you know, let me say this. I do think it’s important that we all recognize that there’s going to be a lot of pressure on states and state officials. And I can assure you, we’re going to work really hard to deliver.
“Some realities also need to be, you know, noted, and that is, in 2016, we had a very different situation in the courts,” she said. “And while I’m sure there may be litigation ahead, you know, there’s a lot of other ways that people are going to act and need to act for the sake of their states and their residents.
“There’s regulatory authority and executive powers and — and the like. There’s legislation also within our states. So I think that the key here is that, you know, every tool in the toolbox has got to be used to protect our citizens, to protect our residents, and protect our states, and certainly to hold the line on democracy and the rule of law as a basic principle, right?”
These emerging efforts are not going unnoticed by Trump and those in his orbit.
Trump was on his social media site to specifically to attack the efforts of Gov Gavin Newsom and other leading Democrats in California.
In a lengthy post, Trump accused the governor of “trying to KILL our Nation's beautiful California,” blaming state Democrats for homelessness and the high cost of living in the state.
The president-elect said Newsom “is using the term ‘Trump-Proof’ as a way of stopping all of the GREAT things that can be done to ‘Make California Great Again.’”
And Fox News host — and one-time Trump press secretary — Kayleigh McEnany sought to dismiss Democrats’ growing opposition to her former boss.
“So much for unity on this Friday after an election,” she griped. “Trump hasn’t even assumed office yet, but high-profile Democrats are vowing to fight back.”
