Democrat Running Against Marjorie Taylor Greene to Oppose Her ‘Foolish Stunts’
Shawn Harris fundraising off Republican's bid to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson
Democrat Shawn Harris wants to make it clear that he’s running to defeat far-right Republican Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene because he’s tired of her “foolish stunts,” like her decision to call for the ouster of Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Harris is one of four declared Democratic hopefuls looking to get the nomination to take on Greene in November.
Greene, first elected to Congress from Georgia’s 14th Congressional District in 2020, filed a “motion to vacate” the speaker’s chair Friday, setting up the second ouster of a Republican speaker in less than a year.
In a move roundly condemned by lawmakers of both parties, Greene called for Speaker Mike Johnson’s removal because he worked with Democrats to pass legislation to fund the federal government and avoid a government shutdown.
“BREAKING NEWS: My opponent, Marjorie Taylor Greene, just filed a motion to vacate Mike Johnson from his position as Speaker of the House,” Harris posted to social media Friday. “We might end up with a paralyzed house again, and we'll pay the price because MTG puts headlines and chaos first and everyday Americans last.”
A cattleman and retired U.S. Army brigadier general who deployed to Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Harris is the most well-financed of the Democrats running in Georgia’s 14th, having raised $169,538 so far.
Harris is married to his physician wife, Karla, and the couple have five kids and have four grandchildren.
He immediately began fundraising off of Greene's move to oust Johnson, who ascended to the speakership in October following nearly a month of paralysis and chaos after Republican Kevin McCarthy was removed.
“I'm running against MTG because she's busy with her foolish stunts all day rather than helping North Georgia,” Harris posted Friday. “We have a game plan to reach every single voter, something that wasn't done here in previous elections.
“Can you chip in $20.24 to unseat MTG?” he added, with a link to a campaign account.
Whatever Democrat prevails in Georgia’s primary election will have a tough fight ahead, in what is a district that tilts heavily Republican located in northwest Georgia.
Harris seems to acknowledge that fact on his campaign website.
“When people first suggested I should run a campaign to unseat Marjorie Taylor Greene, it sounded a little crazy to us. But if my combat experience taught me anything, it’s that the way to make clear decisions is to make them free of fear,” he said. “The more Karla and I talked about it and what it would mean for our family and our community, the more it sounded like something we could do to help our neighbors. And we’re always up for that.”
