Democratic Congressman: GOP Leader McCarthy 'Is Going To Have To Come Up With At Least One Idea For The Future of America'
The failed California recall election this week demonstrates that, while Democrats may be underdogs when it comes to getting elected, Republicans shouldn't count them out, according to a gay congressman who represents a district which leans towards Donald Trump.
California voters overcame Republican hopes of Democratic apathy to roundly defeat the attempt to recall incumbent Gov Gavin Newsom (D) in the midst of his first term.
Voters rejected the recall by a nearly 30-point margin.
Although Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY) acknowledges the difficulties Democrats face heading into coming elections, the California recall proves that Republican political calculus can be flawed.
“Look, we are the underdogs in this fight, let’s be clear. They've stacked the deck and they’re passing all these Jim Crow-style voting laws around the country. But I've got news for Kevin McCarthy,” Maloney said, referring to the Republican leader of the House of Representatives. “Sooner or later he is going to have to come up with at least one idea for the future of America. It's not going to be enough just to suppress the vote and to stack the deck with gerrymandering.
“But it doesn’t surprise me we’re running as underdogs. Remember, I'm a gay guy with an interracial family in a Trump district,” Maloney said. “I haven't won five times by thinking I'm ahead or it's going to be okay. You know, what you do is you look at the odds you’re facing and you figure out how to win. And what I'm telling you is that in the most competitive districts right now, that California race a couple of nights ago really tells you how the messages are matching up when voters get a chance to show up.”
