Democratic Congressman: Trump Trial Should Be Televised
Congress has power to make that happen, Connolly adds
A Democratic congressman from Virginia is adding his voice to those who want to see Donald Trump's trial for attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election televised.
Rep Gerry Connolly, of Virginia, even suggested that Congress could make that happen.
Trump was arraigned last week in a federal courtroom in Washington DC, on the most recent spate of charges against him, in this case four counts related to his attempts to illegally hold on to power after the lawful and legitimate election of Democrat Joe Biden as the next president of the United States.
However, Trump is not only a former president but also the clear frontrunner for the 2024 Republican nomination for president, in a bid to return to the White House.
Although cameras are not typically allowed in federal court, the importance of this Trump trial should create an exception in this case, according to a number of legal analysts and other observers.
This case turns on bedrock notions of American democracy, backers of camera access argue.
“Congress could make that happen. I don’t know that the Republican side of the aisle will accept that and that means it would have a difficult feat in the House of Representatives. But I think it’s a right thing for the American people,” Connolly said. “This is arguably the most important trial in our lifetime. It’s the former president of the United States, it involves fundamental issues about the course of our democracy and the attempt to disrupt it, to overturn it.
“I think the American people are entitled to witness the ups and downs, pros and cons that are arbitrated in that courtroom,” he added.
Without the congressional action Connolly suggested, allowing TV cameras to broadcast the Trump trial would require the say-so of one man: Chief Justice John Roberts, in his role as the administrative head of the entire federal judiciary.
