Democratic Congresswoman Urges Voters to Withhold Support for Biden
Tlaib wants primary to signal protest over deaths in Gaza
A prominent Democratic congresswoman wants voters in her state to withhold support for President Biden in the upcoming presidential primary election to protest US policy supporting Israel and its killing of tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians.
Rep Rashida Tlaib spoke to Michigan voters via online video to urge them to vote “uncommitted” in the state’s Democratic primary election.
Tlaib has been an outspoken critic of Biden and his administration regarding their handling of US support for Israel in its military operations in Gaza since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks.
About 30,000 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 70,000 injured since Israel began its assault on Gaza. That includes tens of thousands of young Palestinian children.
Although Biden has modulated his stance on those Israeli attacks somewhat since his initial stalwart support in the wake of the Hamas attacks, he has not been able to significantly alter the war policy of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing government.
Although Biden easily won his party’s endorsement thus far in his bid for a second term, Tlaib wants to turn Michigan’s Democratic primary this month into a protest vote.
Tlaib was recorded outside of a civic center in Dearborn, reminding voters about the ability to vote early, which ended this weekend.
“It is important, as you all know, to not only march against the genocide, not only make sure that we’re calling our members of Congress and local electeds passing city resolutions all throughout our country” opposing Israeli policy, she said.
“It is also important to create a voting bloc, something that is a bullhorn to say, ‘Enough is enough. We don’t want a country that supports wars and bombs and destruction. We want to support life. We want to stand up for every single life killed in Gaza,’” Tlaib added. “I want you to think of Shama, of Rima, of Sitra, of all of the amazing young children and the people, again, lives that were lost in Gaza. This is the way you can raise our voices. Don’t make us even more invisible.
“Right now, we feel completely neglected and just unseen by our government. If you want us to be louder, then come here and vote ‘uncommitted.’”
