Democratic Consultant: House GOP Hasn’t Yet Adopted the Rules; the Chaos Isn’t Finished
The next round of Republican infighting could come Monday
Although last week's stunning disarray in the House of Representatives finally ended with the election of Kevin McCarthy as speaker, that wasn't necessarily the end of the chaos to be seen in the chamber, according to one longtime Democratic political consultant.
McCarthy may finally have won the speaker's gavel on an astounding 15th round of balloting, but House Republicans have yet to adopt the package of rules which will formally govern the House for the next two years.
So beginning Monday, that's the next potential minefield which could plunge the chamber into right-wing infighting and division.
“We may all be back here tomorrow as this all unravels again,” Karen Finney, political consultant and spokesperson for Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign, said Sunday. “The last thing I want to say, Maya Angelou once said, ‘When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.’
“I’m going to believe the 15th time … If you can’t even get your rules package done, there won’t be time for any of those other things,” Finney added, during an on-camera appearance on CNN, referring to approving major legislation.
