Democrats Give No Ground On Kavanaugh Restaurant Protest Flap
No hint of irony when Fox reporter asks if justice has right to privacy
Democrats are giving no ground in response to right-wing outrage over the flap about Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh facing peaceful protests outside of a restaurant where he was having dinner.
Media outlets and others on the political right are in a lather because protesters demonstrated outside Morton's, while Kavanaugh was enjoying a full meal.
Kavanaugh, who reportedly used a rear entrance and never even saw the protesters, faced the demonstration as one of the right-wing bloc on the high court who recently voted to overturn Roe v Wade and upend nearly a half century of national abortion rights.
Kavanaugh reportedly chose to leave the restaurant before dessert — but after completing a full meal.
Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy used the matter as his on-camera fare to try to gin up outrage during Friday's daily White House press briefing.
With no apparent trace of irony, Doocy asked White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, “These justices … have no right to privacy?”
In its ruling doing away with Roe, the court said that there is no constitutional right to privacy in the United States.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg defended his husband, Chasten, whose tweet tweaked Kavanaugh on privacy — but this time, with appropriate irony.
“Sounds like he just wanted some privacy to make his own dining decisions,” Chasten Buttigieg tweeted.
Pete Buttigieg stood behind both his husband's tweet and the protesters.
“When public officials go into public life we should expect two things. One, you should always be free from violence, harassment and intimidation. And two, you’re never going to be free from criticism or peaceful protests, people exercising their First Amendment rights,” Secretary Buttigieg said. “That's what happened in this case. Remember the justice never even came into contact with these protesters, reportedly didn't see or hear them,” he added.
The protesters have a legitimate complaint, Buttigieg said.
“These protesters are upset because a right, an important right that the majority of Americans support, was taken away. Not only the right to choose, by the way, but this justice was part of the process to stripping away the right to privacy,” he said.
Outspoken Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) also weighed in.
“Poor guy. He left before his soufflé because he decided half the country should risk death if they have an ectopic pregnancy within the wrong state lines. It’s all very unfair to him. The least they could do is let him eat cake,” she tweeted, referring to Kavanaugh.
