Democrats Once Again Push President Biden On Student Loan Debt
But this time, White House punts back to Congress
It's getting to be that you can almost set your watch to it: congressional Democrats once again pressuring President Biden to cancel $50,000 of student loan debt for all applicable Americans.
Since nearly the start of the Biden administration, congressional Democrats have, periodically, exhorted the president to cancel $50,000 of student loan debt for all eligible Americans.
Biden, however, has continued to demure.
Once again, Democrats have put the pressure back on, facing the end of the pause the federal government put in place on student loan repayment due to the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
“Millions of young people will soon have to begin making student loan payments again. Payments they cannot afford. We need to continue the freeze on repayments until the pandemic is over. Better yet, we should cancel $50,000 in debt for every student,” tweeted Rep Adam Schiff, of California.
If Biden were to cancel student loan debt up to $50,000 based on executive action, that would help about 36 million Americans, or around 85 percent of borrowers — and make life easier for the remaining 15 percent, according to Democrats pushing Biden to take action.
Rep Pramila Jayapal, of Washington State, is another Democrat pressing the case, this time, with Biden.
“Student loan payments resume in 48 days. Today would be a great day for @POTUS to cancel at least $50,000 of student loan debt per borrower,” she tweeted.
However, this time the White House tossed the matter back to Congress.
“If Congress sends him a bill, he’s happy to sign it. They haven’t sent him a bill on that yet,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Tuesday.
