‘DeSantis Managed to Make Himself Look Weak, Hypocritical and Legally Clueless’
Florida governor criticized for refusing to aid Trump's extradition
Florida's Republican governor is under fire for publicly declaring that he wouldn't assist the extradition of Donald Trump, if necessary.
Criticism of Gov Ron DeSantis is mounting, after he posted a tweet saying that he would “not assist in an extradition request” if necessary to bring Trump to justice in case the former president refuses to voluntarily surrender to authorities in New York in response to being criminally indicted Thursday.
Having been indicted, Trump will now be expected to turn himself in to authorities in New York for booking.
A one-time resident of New York, Trump has since moved to his Mar-a-Lago estate and club in Palm Beach, Fla.
DeSantis is widely considered to be a potential contender for the Republican presidential nomination next year.
“I mean, Ron DeSantis basically has to put himself into a pretzel here because it’s very clear he’s going to run against Donald Trump, and he’s stuck between having the difficulty of his likely opponent in a presidential campaign, having a very strong base that he has to obviously win over when he’s the candidate, and at the same time he’s playing to that base by threatening to not use the normal administration of justice process,” said Rep Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla). “And, more importantly, he’s going to the extreme to play to that base in Florida where he’s giving away millions of tax dollars to allow the wealthiest Floridians to be able to get their kids' education paid for in private schools.
“His response to Nashville and Parkland this week is to sign a bill into law, when it hits his desk later, to allow permitless gun carry, a mass proliferation of guns for the first time all across our state, and the list goes on,” speaking of two school shootings, in which children, young people and others were murdered. “So, he’s stuck between a rock and a hard place and he’s not handling it very well. Another example of why he shouldn’t be president, ever.”
DeSantis, a Harvard-educated lawyer, did himself no favors by saying that he would not follow the Constitution if he were not to allow the extradition of Trump, the first current or former president of the United States to get hit with a criminal indictment, according to conservative, “Never Trumper” Charlie Sykes.
“Well, it is interesting that Ron DeSantis managed to make himself look weak, hypocritical, and legally clueless all at the same time by suggesting that he would not cooperate with the extradition under the Constitution. He has no ability to do that,” said Sykes, an American political commentator who is currently editor-in-chief of the website The Bulwark. “But also, it was a signal that he’s willing to do or say anything to pander to the Trumpian base. That is not the way any of these candidates are going to displace Donald Trump.”
Particularly egregious is that DeSantis chose to parrot Trump's antisemitic language calling the prosecutor bringing the case against Trump — Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg — “Soros-backed,” in reference to prominent financier George Soros, according to former Republican congressman — and current co-host of the MSNBC program Morning Joe — Joe Scarborough.
“Look at the Soros-backed – no, it's just Jews. They’re attacking Jewish international bankers. It's what anti-Semites have been doing for hundreds of years, attacking Jewish international bankers,” Scarborough said Friday on on-camera. “That’s what they do. They try to blame everything on Jewish international bankers. It’s Germany 1933.”
