‘Do Not Underestimate AOC’: Former Trump Official Says Congresswoman Could Be Serious 2028 Contender
New York congresswoman maintains significant support among Democrats
Watch for Democratic Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to become a potentially significant choice to run for president in four years.
That’s the prediction from a one-time official during Donald Trump’s first term in office.
The congresswoman from New York, known popularly by her initials, “AOC,” has become an influential and beloved figure among progressives during her time in Congress.
She delivered a fiery and rousing speech this summer at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, and campaigned across the country for Vice President Kamala Harris and other Democrats running for office.
Ocasio-Cortez enjoys “tremendous grassroots support,” said Monica Crowley, a top Treasury Department spokeswoman during the first Trump administration.
She was also an early and effective adopter of using social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok, Crowley said.
“So she’s connecting directly to voters,” Crowley said.
She claimed that although Americans in 2028 won’t support Democratic policies, Republicans should not underestimate Ocasio-Cortez.
“She’s young, she’s vibrant, she’s attractive. I think she’s wrong on everything, but she does have real grassroots support,” Crowley said. “And all of the energy and activism in the Democrat Party remains with the revolutionary left, of which she is a part.
“So, every time the Republicans have underestimated the Democrats, we ended up with Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Joe Biden. So let’s not do it again in four years.”
