Donald Trump's Just Admitted To A Crime: Will It Be Prosecuted?
“What's worse: - a former President violating the Logan Act by conducting foreign policy? or... - knowing that absolutely nothing will be done about it?” popular Twitter account says
Donald Trump's either so stupid, or brazen — or likely both — that he has apparently admitted to a fresh crime committed.
But for a former president so used to breaking the law and getting away with it, easily, will any prosecutor stand up to seek accountability for the wrongdoing Trump publicized Thursday?
Specifically, in one of his many “statements” made to evade his various suspensions on social media, Trump said that his “envoy ambassador,” Ric Grenell, was on the ground at the Kosovo-Serbia border conducting what sounds, suspiciously like, foreign policy.
Grenell served in several official diplomatic and national security roles during the Trump administration, including stints as ambassador to Germany and special presidential envoy for Serbia and Kosovo peace negotiations from 2019 to 2021.
The problem is that Grenell's authority, of course, lapsed the moment that the Trump administration ended on January 20.
The fact that he's continuing to work on foreign policy in the face of a new US administration would be a violation of the Logan Act, which prohibits unauthorized negotiations from undermining the current US government's position.
The law has existed since 1799 and its violation is a felony.
The question, as so many on social media are posing, is there any prosecutor willing to pick up what ought to be a “no-brainer” investigation — or will this apparent transgression also go down in the books for wrongdoing shielded by “right-wing privilege.”
“What's worse: - a former President violating the Logan Act by conducting foreign policy? or... - knowing that absolutely nothing will be done about it?” tweeted a popular Twitter account calling itself Really American.
