‘Donny Two Dolls’ Skewered for Suggesting Kids Sacrifice For His Tariffs
Political analyst suggests comment will find its way into a Democratic attack ad
Donald Trump is being roundly mocked for his comment this week that due to the rising prices caused by the tariffs he’s imposed on China.
One well-known and nonpartisan political analyst suggested that Trump just handed Democrats a valuable political gift with his cruel, offhand remark.
It was during a Cabinet meeting Wednesday, when Trump snapped at a reporter asking him about his ongoing trade war with China that Trump said, “Well, maybe the children will have two dolls instead of 30 dolls, you know. And maybe the two dolls will cost a couple of bucks more than they would normally. But we’re not talking about something that we have to go out of our way.”
MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell immediately dubbed Trump “Donny Two Dolls,” and said the president’s remark was “the sound of a cruel billionaire.”
“That’s the sound of someone rich enough to think that 30 dolls under the tree is a common experience for children in America. And that’s a billionaire mean enough to think that everyone should just calm down and follow his advice at how many dolls should be under a Christmas tree,” O’Donnell said during his Thursday program. “But Donny 2 Dolls’ breathtakingly cold statement about the children of America is the clearest thing he has said to Americans and to Trump supporters about how lost he is, about how incapable he is of serving the needs of anyone in America, including children, who can now understand how stupid and incompetent their president is, including children who came out to support Donald Trump during the presidential campaign.”
Late-night host Stephen Colbert also took aim at Trump’s callousness, and suggested that it had deeper roots.
“Your answer is fewer dolls for our children? What are we going to give our kids? A single Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robot?” the comedian quipped. “He’s just fighting his inner demons. ‘Why did dad leave us? Was I bad? Is that why he left?’ Sad story. It was kind of a sad story.”
Political journalist Chris Cillizza, a YouTuber who worked for decades for CNN and The Washington Post, said that Democrats “would be committing campaign malpractice” if they didn’t make use of the Trump comment in their political advertising because it clearly shows that Trump is “totally out of touch with the concerns of everyday people.”
