Drama, Testimony, And A Probable Crime: Just Another Public Hearing
Amid drama, a stunning announcement by Cheney
Perhaps the watchword for these public hearings put on by the House select committee investigating the events surrounding the January 6 insurrection ought to be: “Expect the unexpected.”
And certainly, the torrent of damning testimony resumed Tuesday, with the seventh — and most recent — hearing in the series.
Yet, also, the session provided captivating human drama, such as the moment when Stephen Ayres, the January 6 defendant who stormed the Capitol, just came up to each police officer in attendance.
“I’m really sorry,” Ayres told Harry Dunn, hugging him.
“This is one of the most powerful moments of the entire Jan 6th hearings. Tears are flowing. There's still hope for us,” tweeted one-time political commentator and “Never Trumper” conservative, Tara Setmayer.
Another such moment took place when former Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale tweeted another of Donald Trump's loyalists, Katrina Pierson saying he regretted helping Trump win in 2016, MSNBC host Joy Reid reported.
“Wow. Trump loyalist Brad Parscale texted Katrina Pierson saying he regretted helping Trump win. ‘A woman is dead,’ he said, because of Trump's rhetoric. When Pierson responds ‘it wasn't the rhetoric,’ Parscale responds: Katrina. Yes it was,’” Reid tweeted, with the dead woman apparently referring to Ashli Babbitt, the January 6 rioter shot and killed by police.
Meanwhile, in a development almost out of the pages of some sort of novel, committee Vice Chair Liz Cheney (R-Wyo) disclosed that after the last hearing Donald Trump himself tried to contact a witness -- one that the public hasn’t yet heard from.
“The witness contacted their lawyer and their lawyer contacted us,” Cheney said, reporting that they have referred the incident to the Justice Department for potential investigation.
Among his other crimes, Trump there may have well added witness tampering to the list.
