Mike Johnson appears to be revealing who’s actually in charge of the incoming government.
In interviews with right-wing media over the last 24 hours or so, the Republican House speaker has let the cat out of the bag as to with whom he needs to consult regarding important decisions.
And Johnson’s masters are that pair of unelected billionaires which Donald Trump has been turning to: Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy.
Johnson made his comments regarding ongoing efforts to approve must-pass legislation to continue to fund the federal government and avoid a government shutdown.
And in guiding those negotiations, Johnson seemed to reveal who is calling the shots.
Trump has put Musk and Ramaswamy in charge of something he’s calling the “Department of Government Efficiency,” or DOGE, which is not a government department at all and is simply something out of the mind of Trump.
But in an interview with Fox News, host Steve Doocy noted that Musk said that the current funding proposal ought to be defeated, as if the ultra-wealthy businessman has some actual authority and that is he and Ramaswamy who must be satisfied.
“Well, I was communicating with Elon last night. Elon and Vivek and I are on a text chain together. And I was explaining to them the background of this. And Vivek and I talked last night about almost midnight. And he said, ‘Look, I get it.’ He said, ‘We understand you’re in an impossible position.’ Everybody knows that,” Johnson replied. “Remember, guys, we still have just a razor thin margin of Republicans. So any bill has to have Democrat votes. They understand the situation.
“They said, ‘It’s not directed to you, Mr. Speaker. But we don’t like the spending,’” Johnson added. “I said, ‘Guess what, fellas? I don’t either.’ We got to get this done, because here’s the key. By doing this, we are clearing the decks and we are setting up for Trump to come in roaring back with the America First agenda.”
