Even As They Battle With Trump, Democrats Push Their Own Agenda
Lawmakers introduce weapons ban, “Medicare For All” legislation
Trying to combat Donald Trump’s authoritarian and unconstitutional policies might seem like a full time job these days.
But even as they try to thwart Trump and his Republican allies, Democrats aren’t giving up on their own priorities.
Within recent days, for instance, they have brought back legislation they’ve been trying to pass for years now: “Medicare For All” healthcare reform and a new ban on assault style weapons.
Sen Bernie Sanders, of Vermont, the progressive independent who caucuses with Democrats, and Reps Debbie Dingell, of Michigan and Pramila Jayapal, of Washington State, introduced the Medicare for All Act at a press conference in front of the Capitol.
Under this legislation, Medicare would provide comprehensive health care to every American with no premiums, no co-payments and no deductibles. It would also expand Medicare to include dental, hearing, and vision care, and it would give every American the freedom to choose their doctors without endless paperwork or fighting their insurance company, the lawmakers said.
Meanwhile, more than 40 Senate Democrats reintroduced the Assault Weapons Ban of 2025, legislation to revive a nationwide ban on assault weapons two decades after the original ban expired.
The bill would ban the sale, transfer, manufacture, and import of military-style assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and other high-capacity ammunition feeding devices.
While the 1994 ban was in place, the United States saw gun massacres decline by 37 percent and mass shooting fatalities were 70 percent less likely. When the ban expired, deaths in a gun massacre rose 239 percent. A ban on assault-style weapons is not only common-sense legislation, it’s widely supported by Americans, and Congress has failed to keep up with the American people on this issue, the Democrats said.
Senators joined gun safety advocates and organizations from across the nation earlier in the day for a press conference of their own to introduce the legislation.
