Evidence Mounts To Show that Republicans Wanted Pence Out of the Way
Grassley had already been saying “we don't expect him to be there,” meaning Pence at the certification
Designs against Vice President Mike Pence exceeded mere chants of “Hang Mike Pence,” by throngs of violent supporters of Donald Trump during the riot at the US Capitol Building on January 6, 2021, according to growing evidence.
Rather, high level Republicans — and even the Secret Service itself — appears to have been in on the attempted coup which nearly prevented the legitimate and lawful election of Joe Biden as president of the United States.
While Trump's violent extremists were preparing to storm the Capitol from the outside, inside Republicans were trying to game the system in an attempt to install Trump for an illegal second term in the White House.
That planning began at least the day before, as Republican Sen Chuck Grassley, of Iowa believed that he — as president pro-tempore of the Senate, at the time — and not Pence, would preside over the certification of the Electoral College win for the Biden/Harris ticket.
Grassley had already been saying “we don't expect him to be there,” meaning Pence at the certification, even a day before the January 6 insurrection.
Pence had already signalled that there was no leeway to lawfully change the election results and hand Trump four more years.
Of course, we know now that Pence did appear at the Senate on January 6, to preside over certification, including the harrowing images of the then-vice president being whisked off the Senate floor only moments before the riotous mob began breaking in.
It's also now come out that, at one point, Pence pointedly refused to cooperate when some Secret Service agents directed him to get into an armored limousine.
It's believed now that that cadre of agents were working on direct loyalty to Trump himself, and that the plan was to spirit Pence away from the Capitol so as to prevent him from presiding over the certification and instead allow a more-pliant Republican to be put in his place.
“[Pence] uttered what are the six most chilling words of this entire thing I've seen so far: 'I'm not getting in that car,” said Rep Jamie Raskin (D-Md), a member of the House select committee investigating the events surrounding the January 6 insurrection.
