Fear And Mountain Dew: Republicans Clearly Worried About Debate
Right-wingers concerned, after years of claims of dementia, Biden will best Trump in debate
The fear of how Donald Trump will fare in Thursday’s first presidential debate against President Biden clearly is wearing on Trump’s Republican allies.
After years of trying to cast Biden as a doddering and senile fool, Republicans are worried that the president could well best Trump and present himself as a capable chief executive.
And while Trump himself has been baselessly and falsely claiming that Biden will be high on cocaine or other drugs during their Thursday debate, his allies have been peddling their own less-explosive — but just as baseless and foolish — narrative that Biden’s team will “jack him up” with the highly caffeinated soft drink, Mountain Dew.
In an interview with CNN host Kaitlan Collins, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson tried to claim that Trump’s allegations of drug use have been in “jest.”
“Look, there‘s a lot of things that are said in jest. Of course, no one expects that Joe Biden would be on cocaine, but they do ask questions and I think they’re objectively — I mean, I think it makes sense why people are asking: ‘Will he be on some sort of energy drinks or something?’ okay,” Johnson said. “Look, his energy levels, you can see, vary dependent on what format is in and what forum, and we expect that he‘ll do what he did at the State of the Union.
“He had a lot of energy that night, so that‘s the Joe Biden I expect to see,” Johnson added. “The question is: ‘Can he stay for 90 minutes on that stage and go toe-to-toe with President Trump?’ who, as you know, goes to rallies and talks for two hours on end without any break and any notes. So it‘ll be a very interesting thing to see.”
As if to put punctuation on the Biden drug claims to put them to rest, Collins said: “Yeah, I mean, the allegations just about drugs have just been frankly ridiculous, and obviously are baseless as well.”
Another Republican member of Congress, Rep. Eric Burlison, of Missouri, specifically cited Mountain Dew in an interview with Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo on Tuesday
During the segment, Bartiromo openly repeated a baseless and outlandish claim by Rep Ronny Jackson (R-Texas) that Biden is at the Camp David presidential retreat where his staff is “experimenting with getting doses right, giving him medicine ahead of the debate.”
In truth, Biden has been at the retreat in the mountains of rural Maryland with about two dozen staff engaged in intensive debate prep, including mock matches.
“Trump’s team should not underestimate Joe Biden and his team’s ability to, you know, whether they’re going to, jack him up on Mountain Dew or whatever it is that it took, [at] the State of the Union this year, he had a lot of energy for about an hour – an hour or an hour and a half,” Burlison said.
